'Realist Narrative' is a media product that is trying to represent our reality as a story. The story is presented to be believable and realistic.
An 'Anti-Realist Narrative' is the opposite of a 'realist narrative'. Although it tells a story, the story is made out to be surreal and nothing like our reality.
Another form of advert is an 'Animation'. An 'Animation' is an advert that is mostly animated. This is quite a large category and many things can fall into it.
'Documentary' is also another form of adverts. This type of advert borrows conventions from factual programmes such as the sight of cameras and puts them into their adverts.
Another form of advert is 'Talking Heads'. This type of advert focuses on camera shots from the shoulders up so it has a more powerful effect on the audience. These adverts are typically based around pieces to camera and interview footage.
'Series'. Most adverts are singular and do not have any other parts - stand alones. However some adverts have a whole series of adverts either as a story together
Codes and Conventions
Codes are systems of signs which create meaning. These are usually put together in a sequence and are divided into two categories; symbolic and technical.
Technical codes are all te ways in which equiptment is used to tell a story in a media style text for example, the camera work in a film.
Symbolic codes show what is beneath the surface of what we see, for example, a characters actions show you how the character is feeling.
Some codes however fit both techical and symbolic catergories, for example music.
Conventions are habits or long accepted ways of doing thins, through repeated experiences audiences start to become familiar with tese. These are general conventions in any medium, such as the use of interviewee quotes in a print artical, bu conventions are also genre specific.
Codes and conventions are used together in any study of genre - it is not enough to discuss a techinical code used such as camera work, without saying how it is conventionally used in a genre. For example, the techinical code of lighting used in some way in all film genres, it is a convention of the horror genre that side and back lighting is used to create a mystery and suspense.
